Believe it or not! even the greats of Hollywood are short of compelling or intriguing storyline to make a blockbuster feature film. It is practically impossible to read all the scripts or stories that the producers or the directors come across every day.
A small step with a Short film, a giant leap towards the mainstream!
This might sound absurd or far-fetched from the truth albeit, we might have already seen most of the feature films. You will be astounded to know that some of the biggest hits in Hollywood were initially shorts. The masterpiece like Mama, Saw, Whiplash, 9, The Babadook and few others have all been from shorts.
Indian Film Industry is following the same path, let’s take for instance the Tamil movie “Kadhalil Sodhapuvudu eppadi”, the movie was a successful one, it was initially a short, with the same name directed by debutant director Balaji Mohan. And, many of the directors who made blockbuster movies in the last couple of years, have had their breakthrough with shorts.
Shorts, a Pot of Gold:
In the last few years, the shorts have given us brilliant artists. Here are some honorary mentions: Karthik Subbaraj(Pizza, Jigarthanda), Atlee(Raja Rani), Alphonse Puthren(Premam, Neram).
On the contrary, established actors and directors have very much been part of the success of the short film segment. From the legendary actor Naseeruddin Shah, Manoj Bajpayee, Konkona Sen Sharma, Tisca Chopra Nawazuddin Siddique, Anurag Kashyap and many others.
It’s like they say: Never Underestimate a Short!
