Anthology Films in India dates back to 1939. ‘Sirrikathe’, a Tamil film, was the first Indian anthology film as per Wikipedia. And then, there has been many after that, in Bengali, Kannada, Hindi, Malayalam etc.
Paris, je t’aime(Paris, I Love You) is a most talked about anthology films in this genre. An ambitious project with 22 Directors and cast of different nationalities.
An anthology film or Omnibus film is a film consisting of several different short films, often tied together by only a single theme, premise, or brief interlocking event. Sometimes each one is directed by a different director.
Anthology of Short Films is a great Start.
Let’s face it, every Short Movie made has a cost to it and not all the movies listed on Youtube can get the views to get ROI.
‘Bench Talkies — The First Bench’ is a first of its kind anthology film in the Tamil industry, it was an initiative by Director Karthik Subbaraj of Pizza and Jigarthanda fame. He turned into a Producer with his banner Stone bench Creations. The Film has 6 short films and the response was average. However, the bottom line is it is a darn good start.
This venture was followed by another movie ‘Aviyal’, which apparently was well received by both the critics and the audience. However, both the movies had established actors starring in them, nevertheless, the bottom line is that it’s a good start.
‘Bombay Talkies’, a Bollywood anthology film is a recent film in this genre and did quite good in the box office. However, one can say, those were acclaimed directors(Zoya Akhtar, Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap, Dibakar Banerjee).
How does this help the Novice?
Well, in all the above examples, it is evident that you need a celebrity element, either the Cast or the directors for the movies to sell in Theatres. The Short Films segment is still in the developing stage, it is open for all.
Identifying the right Films and artists is the crucial factor, once there is a mechanism in place for that, it will become seemingly easy for the Producers to collaborate with the artists and make Omnibus films.
