We all love watching a comedy film. In fact, comedians existed right from the Silent Era of film. The history of cinema has faced many stages through which it evolved many times. The Silent Film era refers to a period that extends from the late 19th century to the early 1930s.

A Silent Film is a film with no synchronized recorded sounds or dialogues.

Soon, talkies or sound films came in marking the beginning of the Golden Age of Hollywood.  In fact, both of these periods in the history of cinema portrayed comedians in different films. So, let’s get familiar with 3 classic comedians of the period that ranged from the Silent Film era to the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Charlie Chaplin

Of course, you will surely have heard of this legendary actor who ruled the film world in the silent era. Chaplin attained worldwide recognition as a film icon through his film ‘The Tramp’.

In fact, his career spanned right from the Victorian era when he was only a child to 1977. And that’s almost 75 years! He is still considered one of the most renowned classic comedians of all time. Charlie Chaplin’s style of comedy is often categorized under slapstick comedy. But, many movie fanatics describe it as highly ‘thoughtful’ and ‘intelligent’.

Slapstick films are comedy films with exaggerated physical activities that include clownish gestures and actions. This includes tripping, falling, funny mistakes and practical jokes.

Apart from acting, Chaplin had a keen interest in music and learned to play the piano, violin, and cello. Moreover, he loved composing soundtracks for his films. Charlie Chaplin died in 1977, leaving behind a great legacy.

Laurel and Hardy

Laurel and Hardy were a comedy duo of the Classical Hollywood era. They rose into famed during the 1920s. Besides, they had a sense of perfect harmony among them. In fact, this makes them stand out from other classic comedians of all time. Moreover, they’ve appeared together in 107 films that range from Silent Films to Talkies. Like Charlie Chaplin, this comedy duo also used slapstick comedies to entertain their viewers.

Their movies usually portray Laurel with a clumsy and spontaneous nature. At the same time, Hardy is a funny know-all who thinks he’s wise enough. And, when these two come together, they make two comical walking disasters. Indeed, they made a great team! Some of their notable films include ‘The Music Box’, ‘Way Out West’, ‘Helpmates’, and ‘Another Fine-Mess’.
